I was invited to partake in a Ride organized by the Christchurch dealers of Victory and Indians last sunday. The ride was from Christchurch to Hanmer Springs a distance of around 280 kms return. Sunday came around a sunny day but a wet southerly blew thru which made me think "OH BUGGER!"...it was only brief tho so i mounted up and rode into meet the others at the dealership.
Two of my friends were there...one has a newish Victory Hammer 8 ball and the other has just bought an Indian scout. The manager of the dealership was riding an Indian Chieftan with all the fruit on it and there was another Victory Hammer and a Victory Gunner.
We set off and met up with more Victories and Indians.
As we left the city, the wind started!...a Norwester!, which comes off the plains with heat and gusto!..Riding in this was a challenge especially in the open areas where the wind was reputed to be up to 90 kilometers an hour in gusts!...side on..head on...every way on!...the trick is to watch the bikes in front getting hit by a gust and get ready! I found it a challenge which i was determined to conquer and rode hard and fast finding it easier if i was going quicker.
We stopped at a country hotel for a chinwag and a beer and continued on reaching Hamner a bit spent. Beer and food was a relief and after about an hour we headed home...the wind had eased somewhat and was now behind us making the trip back alot easier and enjoyable. I met some good dudes and was empressed by those big Indians with all their fruit on board...they slide along real nice!

I've never ridden a more stable bike when conditions go bad. I've found the same thing about the speed - the faster, the less difference the gusts make. Glad you had fun!

The victorys dropped back in that wind...might have been the riders taking the cautious approach tho...i like to dig deep in times like that and go for it...it works sometimes but i have had my snorer busted a few times!

Talking, chatting......... - Wagging one's chin. I thought it was just an English 'slang' but it appears to have travelled.
